A distinctive vintage handmade Konya rug from Central Anatolia, Turkey, woven from wool and characterized by its thick, high-pile surface and unusual repeating geometric composition. Measuring 150 × 375 cm (4.9 × 12 ft), this approximately 70–80-year-old piece combines the warmth and texture of traditional Anatolian weaving with a bold elongated format.
The central field is divided into a sequence of vertical panels containing large rounded geometric forms in alternating deep red and warm cream tones. Within these shapes are stylized branching or tree-like motifs, creating a rhythmic pattern that repeats along the length of the rug.
A warm mustard-orange ground strengthens the contrast between the central motifs, while the surrounding borders feature dense geometric ornamentation in brown, ivory, orange, burgundy, black, and muted green. The result is a richly textured village rug with a particularly strong folk-art character.
About the High-Pile Construction
The term high pile refers to a rug whose wool fibers rise noticeably higher above the foundation than those of a typical low-pile Turkish carpet.
This deeper pile gives the rug:
A thicker and softer surface
Greater visual texture and dimensionality
A warmer, more cushioned feel
Stronger definition between colors and motifs
A distinctly handmade village character
High-pile wool rugs were especially practical in Anatolian communities because the additional wool provided warmth and insulation, while also creating a comfortable textile for everyday household use.
In this example, the longer wool pile gives the geometric motifs a slightly softer outline than those seen on tightly clipped carpets. This contributes to the rug’s tactile, rustic appearance and makes it especially attractive as a statement textile.
