A striking vintage handmade Caucasian rug associated with the Derbent weaving tradition, featuring a highly graphic geometric composition, vivid color contrasts, and the expressive character typical of Caucasian tribal and village carpets.
The ivory central field is dominated by a sequence of large elongated geometric medallions arranged horizontally across the rug. Deep blue outlines, salmon and peach interiors, olive accents, and small stylized floral elements create a powerful symmetrical rhythm. Secondary medallions and abstract botanical motifs fill the spaces around the main forms, giving the field a rich but carefully organized appearance.
The composition is surrounded by several decorative borders. A wide main border contains repeating geometric floral forms, while narrow blue guard borders introduce continuous hooked and wave-like patterns. The combination creates a strong architectural frame around the lighter central field.
The palette includes deep navy blue, ivory, salmon, peach, terracotta, olive green, burgundy, muted turquoise, brown, and red accents. Approximately 60–70 years old, the rug has developed the natural tonal variations and surface character expected from a genuine vintage handwoven textile.
About Caucasian Derbent Rugs
Derbent is a historic city and weaving area in Dagestan in the eastern Caucasus, close to the western shore of the Caspian Sea. The wider region has long been connected with Caucasian carpet-making traditions and the movement of textiles, designs, and weaving techniques between neighboring communities.
Rugs associated with Derbent and the broader northeastern Caucasian tradition are often recognized for their strong geometric character. Designs may include:
Large geometric and elongated medallions
Stylized flowers and botanical forms
Strongly outlined diamonds and angular motifs
Repeating secondary ornaments
Multiple structured borders
Contrasting ivory, red, blue, green, yellow, and earthy colors
Caucasian village rugs are particularly appreciated for their bold drawing and clear geometry. Rather than attempting naturalistic representation, flowers and plants are often transformed into angular, symbolic forms that give the carpets their recognizable folk-art quality.
This example is especially distinctive for its large interconnected medallions, light ivory field, strong blue outlines, and colorful floral-geometric border system.
