This vintage Turkish prayer rug is a beautifully handwoven wool textile featuring a clearly defined stepped mihrab, a warm brick-red field, and an ornate floral medallion. Its mustard, pale blue, ivory, black, and muted rose details create a rich yet softly aged Anatolian palette.
Approximately 60 years old, the rug reflects the traditional village-weaving heritage of Turkey. The naturally softened colors, handmade texture, and subtle variations in the weave give it the distinctive character of an authentic vintage textile.
For international buyers, this type of rug is commonly described as a Turkish prayer rug, mihrab rug, or seccade. A mihrab is the prayer niche in a mosque wall that indicates the direction of prayer. Anatolian weavers translated this architectural feature into textile form, usually depicting it as a pointed, arched, or stepped niche that creates a symbolic personal prayer space.
The stepped mihrab is clearly visible in the upper part of this rug. Decorative floral and architectural motifs surround the niche, while the large central medallion gives the composition balance and visual depth. The layered borders, filled with scrolling geometric forms, complete its expressive folk-art appearance.
Although originally associated with personal prayer, vintage seccade rugs are now also appreciated as collectible textile art. This piece would work beautifully as a bedside rug, entryway accent, wall hanging, meditation-space textile, or decorative focal point in a traditional, bohemian, rustic, or eclectic interior.
Natural wear, subtle fading, slight irregularities, and variations in color and weave are part of the rug’s genuine handmade character.
