This vintage Turkish prayer rug is a distinctive handwoven wool textile featuring a vivid red central field, olive-green sections, and a richly decorated ivory border filled with colorful geometric and floral motifs. Approximately 60 years old, it reflects the expressive village-weaving traditions of Anatolia and carries the authentic character of a handmade vintage rug.
This type of rug is traditionally known as a mihrab rug or Turkish prayer rug. A mihrab is the recessed niche found in a mosque wall that indicates the direction of prayer. Anatolian weavers adapted this architectural form into rug designs, usually representing it as a pointed or stepped arch that creates a symbolic personal prayer space.
The stepped mihrab is clearly visible in the center of this rug. Its red prayer field is surrounded by stylized plant and arrow-like motifs, while the upper section features abstract trees, floral forms, and smaller arch-like shapes. The ivory border is decorated with colorful stars and geometric elements, giving the rug a lively folk-art appearance.
Although originally woven for personal prayer, vintage mihrab rugs are now also admired as collectible textile art.
